Toronto Islands residents have been left feeling a little stranded after the ferry they rely on to bring them to the mainland broke down Tuesday. The breakdown Tuesday left island residents stranded on the mainland until the Port Authority added extra service past midnight to bring them back to the island on the ferry that services Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. A replacement ferry is not expected to be ready for service until Thursday, the port authority said.

In the meantime, the port authority is providing residents escorted access across the runways to and from the ferry that takes passengers from the island airport to the foot of Bathurst Street on the mainland. However that takes longer because residents must wait until the airport space is clear of planes before they can cross to and from the airport dock. Island residents are not normally able to access the airport portion of the island because of safety concerns. Critics have said allowing jets to fly from the airport would mean excessive noise and pollution. At a meeting earlier this month, city council voted to defer the debate by several weeks until they could gather more information.
